Benefits of Midland Metro
The Midland Metro extensions will provide valuable new transport corridors through some of the most deprived areas of the West Midlands improving access to jobs and services for residents as well as attracting new business and developments to these areas.
Based on modal transfer achieved for Line 1, the Phase 1 and 2 routes would together remove almost eight million car journeys from the West Midlands roads each year.
Metro has zero pollution at point of use, improving the air quality and noise levels in our already busy town and city streets - helping to create cleaner, greener and healthier town and city centres.
Improved public transport will attract new public transport users allowing more efficient movement of shoppers, workers and tourists through our town and city centres, Modern accessible trams will have low floor / level boarding and space on board for wheelchairs and buggies. The trams and tram stops will comply with the latest disability discrimination regulations.
The phase 1 and 2 Metro, when completed, could carry up to 65 million passengers per annum. The routes are expected to be finacially sustainable, they will receive no subsidy and are expected to make a profit after four years of operation.
Midland Metro extensions have the potential to create 14,506 new jobs of which 73.9% will be in Regeneration Zones adding £513 million to the region's economy. The sectors which will receive the biggest boost from the improved network are business services, wholesale, retail and manufacturing. Health and education sectors will also be winners.
