Birmingham City Centre Extension

Birmingham City Centre Extension will continue the Metro from St Paul's on Line 1 through the city centre via Bull Street, Corporation Street, Stephenson Place, Victoria Square and Broad Street to the terminus just past the Edgbaston shopping centre on Hagley Road.

Metro will be key to moving people around the city centre in a quick, quiet and convenient way; connecting retail, leisure and commercial centres and provinding valuable links to the bus and rail network in the city environment, improve air quality, reduce pollution and noise levels in the heart of the city. All stops and trams will be fully accessible and the modern vehicles will be able to carry over 200 people.

Transport and Works Act powers are in place and we are ready to start to appoint contractors when we receive funding approval.

Modern trams will enhance the image of the city centre supporting its role as a World City at the heart of the City-Region. Costing £116 million Metro has attracted private sector funding from developers in the city centre and 25% of its costs have already been met in this way. This route is expected to attract 9 million passengers per annum and take 1.4 million car journeys off the road.

Birmingham City Centre extension and the route from Wednesbury to Brierley Hill will be built as a joint project and they are expected to take three years to build and recoup their costs within the first four years of operation.
