Birmingham Eastside Extension The details
The plans for the new Birmingham Eastside Extension have been developed in close cooperation with Birmingham City Council. These plans strongly support and complement city and regional plans for development and form part of the Centro Strategy for the region 'Towards a World Class Integrated Transport Network'.
Adding two new tram stops
to the city centre network
This Metro extension in the city centre will start at the
junction of Bull Street and Corporation Street and connect the
existing metro network to two planned new stops located in the
Eastside of the City.
The first new stop will be located near Moor Street and will be as near as possible to the planned HS2 station 'Birmingham Curzon Street' and to the adjacent Moor Street Station.
The second stop will be located near Millennium Point - between the Thinktank Science Garden/ Eastside City Park and Curzon Street. Running between Wolverhampton and Birmingham Eastside, the Eastside Extension will offer a fast and frequent service with a tram operating every six minutes.
The route options:
We have considered options to link the tramway to Eastside and identified 6 potential routes of which 2 are practicable. We are asking for your views on these 2 options. Details of all the options considered are on our website.
The two route options are:
• Route option 1 (via Bull Street and Carrs Lane)
• Route option 2 (via Bull Street and Albert Street)
Route option 1
(via Bull Street and Carrs Lane)
Route option 1 is the longer of the route options for the Birmingham Eastside Extension - measuring 925m in total length.
Route option 1 will join the existing Metro network at the junction of Bull Street and Corporation Street in Birmingham City Centre. It will then travel down lower Bull Street, before turning right onto High Street. After this, the line will turn left to continue along Carrs Lane before crossing Moor Street Queensway. Here it will join the new Metro stop at Moor Street Queensway, before continuing along Eastside promenade to reach the new Curzon Street Station stop.
Route option 2
(via Bull Street and Albert Street)
Route option 2 is the shorter of the route options for the Birmingham Eastside Extension - measuring 800m in total length.
Like route 1, it will join the existing Metro network at the junction of Bull Street and Corporation Street in Birmingham City Centre. The line will travel along Lower Bull Street crossing Dale End, travelling onto New Meeting Street with a stop at Albert Street, before reaching Moor Street Queensway and joining the new tram at the new Curzon Street Station stop.
