What
is Midland Metro?
Midland Metro is a modern tram system that can run both separated from other traffic and safely on streets with other traffic and pedestrians. Developed as a higher quality mode of public transport than the bus, it is fast, reliable, convenient and easy to use. Experience has shown that Midland Metro provides an attractive alternative to using the car for many journeys.
It has also increased choice of travel and destinations available to communities in the area it serves.
Tried and tested
Midland Metro currently operates between Wolverhampton City Centre, Wednesbury, West Bromwich and Birmingham City Centre, serving the heart of residential, business, leisure and retail areas along the way.
The service offers a turn-up-and-go frequency and convenient park and ride sites are provided at four of the stops along the way. All the trams and stops have easy access making it easy to use for all including people in wheelchairs and families with pushchairs or buggies.
Over 5 million passengers a year are attracted to the best performing public transport mode in the West Midlands and it consistently exceeds 98% reliability of service.
It’s proved so popular with users that we want to expand the network so bringing the benefits of a Metro system to even more people in the West Midlands.
The Midland Metro extensions will provide a valuable new transport corridor through some of the most deprived areas of the West Midlands improving access to jobs and services for residents as well as attracting new business and developments to these areas.
Based on modal transfer achieved for Line 1, the Phase1 and 2 routes would together remove almost eight million car journeys from the West Midlands roads each year.
Environmental Improvements
Metro has zero pollution at point of use, helping to improve the air quality and noise levels in our already busy town and city streets- helping to create cleaner, greener and healthier town and city centres.
Improved public transport will attract new public transport users allowing more efficient movement of shoppers, worker and tourists through our town and city centres. Modern accessible trams will have low floor/level boarding and space on board for wheelchairs and buggies. The trams and tram stops will comply with the latest disability discriminations regulations.
The phase 1 and 2 Metro, when completed, could carry up to 65million passengers per annum and is expected to make a profit in the region of £20million.
Midland Metro extensions have the potential to create 14,506 new jobs of which 73.9% will be from Regeneration Zones adding £513million to the region’s economy. The sectors which will receive the biggest boost from the improved network are business services, wholesale, retail and manufacturing. Health and education sectors will also be winners.
