Centro engages in a wide range of regeneration activities throughout the West Midlands, covering social, economic and environmental issues.

These include addressing social inclusion and the unmet transport needs of disadvantaged groups and communities in the region. To help improve access to key services such as employment, health, education and other social needs, Centro has funded a number of socially necessary transport projects.

Social Inclusion Funding grants are now available to organisations as a result of the 'Making the Connections' report, produced by the Social Exclusion Unit in 2004. The report emphasised that accessibility is not just about transport, but about location, design, the delivery of other services and people's perceptions of personal safety.

If your organisation has identified a transport solution to a community or group need, Centro's Social Inclusion Fund might well be a source of funding your organisation could benefit from.

Centro first developed WorkWise in the West Midlands in 2003.
The overall objectives of WorkWise are:

  • To help get unemployed people into work
  • To encourage unemployed people into sustainable travel habits
  • To support the local economy by ensuring access to employment sites
  • To support the integration of the transport system with the needs of the Jobcentres

Since 2004, WorkWise projects in the West Midlands have received funding support from various sources of funding including Advantage West Midlands, ERDF Objective 2, Neighbourhood Renewal Funds, Solihull MBC and in kind contributions from Birmingham City Council, Walsall MBC and JCP managers in Solihull and Birmingham. All these have been sought as "match-funding sources" to Centro's contribution through the Social Inclusion Fund.
